For the past 5 years, The Oxytocin Collective has provided a valuable service to the families of Newcastle and Lake Macquarie in the form of an ancient yet newly appreciated postpartum care practice known as Placenta Encapsulation.

Two years ago the business expanded to also include the upper Central Coast as well as the Mid North Coast region of Port Macquarie and Kempsey.

In many cultures, the placenta is not simply discarded as medical waste – it is recognised as an organ of great significance.

It is the only organ that develops and grows within another organ and is solely responsible for growing a healthy baby. It is the bridge between a mother and her baby in the womb, and in medieval times it was said to nurture an unborn baby’s body and soul.

For thousands of years there have been rituals surrounding the burial of the placenta, and in Chinese culture the placenta is considered a powerful medicine – enter Placenta Encapsulation.

The Oxytocin Collective team is made up of Ana, Bec & Ysée, who are all advocates of the natural life, natural parenting and the firm belief that a woman’s body is capable of the most remarkable things. With this sentiment in mind, they combine their experience and education to offer Placenta Encapsulation as a natural option to assist in preventing hormonal fluctuations postpartum including the effects of post-natal depression.

Each member of The Oxytocin Collective holds Certification in Safe Food Handling Preparation as per the NSW Food Safety Act as well as Bloodborne Pathogens & Infection Control for Placenta Encapsulators by Biologix. The Oxytocin Collective are registered with the national governing body Placenta Services Australia and can be found at placentaservices.com.au.

Once your baby is born, your placenta will need to be refrigerated within 4 hours after the birth, and your Specialist will want to collect the placenta generally within 48 hours of birthing your baby.

Firstly, this is for health and safety reasons, but just as importantly because you are likely to feel at your lowest on day four or five, it’s ideal to have your encapsulated placenta capsules back as soon as possible, to help you through this hormonal dip.

New mothers who are well supported and well nourished usually recover quickly after birth, and having placenta capsules on hand is a safe natural way to promote postpartum wellness.  More and more women today are no longer discarding their placentas but choosing to honour their strength and health.
